Eyelid Lift (Blepharoplasty)

As we all know, the eyes are a prominent facet of the human face. The surrounding tissue conveys a great deal of emotion. The tissue, muscle, fat, hair and lashes all contribute to the wide array of expressions. Unfortunately, wrinkles and deep lines as well as puffiness under the lids develop as you age. In addition, exposure to the sun as well as hereditary factors contribute to the aging process, all resulting in changes of expression. In many cases, people may look fatigued, worn out, and older than their true age. Beyond possible visual impairment, these changes in your appearance can cause stress and anxiety. An eyelid lift or blepharoplasty, is designed to improve and restore youthful appearance. Blepharoplasty may involve either the upper or lower lids or both.

In a blepharoplasty, the upper lid incision lies in the lid crease and is not noticeable when the eye is open. The lower lid incision lies in the conjunctiva along the inside of the lower eyelid or less commonly in the skin below the lashes. These incisions may extend a small distance towards the temples.

Local anesthesia is given around the eyes. An intravenous line is started so that sedation may also be given. During the procedure you will be awake but comfortable and relaxed. General anesthesia can be used but is generally not needed when blepharoplasty is performed without other cosmetic procedures.

This procedure is done as an outpatient surgery in the office or outpatient surgery center. It is important to arrange for care after the surgery. Someone must drive you home and be available to care for you for the first 24 hours. During the first 24-48 hours you will have substantial swelling and possibly blurry vision. Swelling begins to subside after 2-3 days. Stitches may be removed in 5 days or dissolve depending on the type of suture used. Makeup can be applied a day or two after stitches are removed. Swelling and bruising will persist for about 10-14 days. You may expect to resume normal activity in about a week.

Wrinkling will recur with the passage of time. Deeper wrinkles around the outer eye extended onto the temple are not greatly affected by blepharoplasty. These areas may be treated with laser resurfacing, facelift or brow lift depending on the extent and location.

Complications from this surgery are generally minimal but can include bleeding and swelling, delayed wound healing, infection, drooping of the eyelid, upper or lower eyelid asymmetry or dry eyes, or blindness.
